Despite two days of zero cases, Western Australia Premier, Mark McGowan has refused to confirm if lockdown will end early, saying they “can’t be too careful”.
Both he and his Deputy Premier, Roger Cook were questioned over whether the state’s “incredible result” – no new cases and record test numbers in the last 24 hours – would signal a premature end to the five-day lockdown.
“We’re very cautious. We’ve said that the whole way along, we’re going to be very cautious. And that we’d clamp down hard if we got cases,” Mr McGowan told reporters this afternoon.
“We said the whole way along our biggest threat was international arrivals, that’s turned out to be true, and that we’d be very, very harsh and tough if we had a case, and that’s exactly what we’ve done.
“Adelaide did the same, Brisbane did the same, I think northern Tasmania did the same, Melbourne did the same. This is not unusual, it’s very unfortunate, but it’s not unusual.”
He added that with COVID-19, “you can’t be too careful”.
“And I’m going to say this ad nauseum, I do not want to be in the situation of Britain or the United States or Melbourne. I just do not want our state to go there,” he said.
“Our isolation and our measures have stood us in good stead now for nearly a year. This is obviously a significant setback, but if we can crush it and kill it now, we can get back onto a good pathway in the future.”
The Premier also commended Western Australia on their “incredible result” overnight.
“Yesterday, we performed a record amount of testing, across an incredible result. A total of 15,496, this result on day one of lockdown is an amazing number,” he said.
“Thank you to everyone who came forward and got tested. You have all done your state proud. To put the testing number into comparison, this is more than double the number of tests completed the day after the Northern Beaches outbreak in Sydney.”
