The body of a woman who disappeared while snorkelling at a Melbourne beach has been found.

The woman’s body was pulled from the water off Altona beach in the city’s west by police divers about 10.30am on Monday.

Police said the body was believed to be that of the 20-year-old Ashwood woman, who is thought to have drowned after going missing while snorkelling with friends on Saturday morning.

A police spokeswoman said her body was found in the water near the Altona pier.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious and police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The 20-year-old disappeared from sight about 11.15am on Saturday with the woman’s distraught family and friends watching on as water police, the air wing and lifesavers searched the area for the next two days.

The woman is the 43rd drowning death in Victorian waters since July 1 last year and continues a horror summer in the state’s waterways.

The 2020-21 financial year is already the state’s deadliest on record for drownings and has already surpassed last year’s 34 fatal drownings, even though there is still five months to go.

Victorian lifesavers have also been involved in 326 rescues and more than 105,000 preventable actions, such as intervening early to stop someone getting into trouble.
