The Durban University of Technology, DUT, of SouthAfrica has confirmed that a student has died after being stabbed by another student in one of the university’s residences in the Durban CBD.
According to a statement issued by the university, the incident took place on the afternoon of Thursday 7 January 2020.
“It is alleged that students were fighting in a room. Sadly one of the students was stabbed during the altercation. When the Residence Advisor arrived on the scene, paramedics were called to assist the victim.
“The ambulance arrived within five minutes of receiving the call but tragically, the injured student had passed on. The police are investigating this very serious criminal incident. We hope that the police will have a successful investigation and that justice will be served against whoever committed this heinous crime.”
Police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed that a case of murder is being investigated by Durban Central SAPS.
“It is alleged that yesterday at 16:50, a 19-year-old male was stabbed to death by a known suspect while at a student residence on Grey Street. He sustained a stab wound on the left side of the neck and was declared dead on the scene by paramedics. The suspect fled the scene after the incident and is being sought by police.”
The university made headlines in 2019 when first-year Industrial Engineering student Sandile Ndlovu, 18, was attacked inside a lecture room. Ndlovu was stabbed in the head and his cell phone and laptop were also taken.
Four days later, another student was found dead in one of the residences and it was believed that the student committed suicide.
In February 2019, Mlungisi Madonsela was shot by a security officer from XTLG T/A Excellent Security Services, the company contracted by the university to protect students and staff.
Again in February, the body of 30-year-old Dr Euvette Taylor (who was a staff member and residence advisor) was found dead in his room on campus.
The current Sterling House residence advisors could not be reached for a comment.
