The most interesting thing for me in 2020 wasn’t the court trials, the threats of rearrested or assassination? The numerous lawsuits secretly filed against me or even the mass protests.
Well, here is the story: One day I hatched a plot with a Comrade to do something different and worthwhile during my incarceration in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja by a Federal Judge, our idea was to find me a high school where I could volunteer my time as a teacher.
I had the pleasant company of a collaborator, an astute fellow, Sydney Godwin, who went in search of secondary schools in the outskirts of the city, in our calculation, we believe those in the main city are likely to become suspicious and naturally scared to accept my services.
A few days after scouting around he rushed back with excitement that he’d found a school about an hour away willing to accept me as a teacher, I was to teach Government, History and Geography to Senior Secondary School Class 3 (SSS) students,
I was excited, I asked if the Principal was aware of who I was and he said “Yes,” so we set out one morning to go start my new gig as school teacher. Off we went, teaching wasn’t new to me having done close to a decade teaching Post-Colonial AFRICAN History at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City.
We drove out of my abode ready with instructional materials, some books, pads and writing materials for distribution to the students, upon arrival what we saw was shocking, the Principal who we thought would be waiting to receive us had absconded through a bush path we were told.
The Assistant Principal, an older female swore she wasn’t aware of our coming and stated that the school doesn’t need volunteers as teachers, she spoke from a distance throughout our encounter.
Although I wasn’t shocked, but I found it strange and hilarious that the Principal wouldn’t even wait around to tell us why he’d changed his mind or leave a note or something.
I left the school quietly and shared the books, pens and instructional materials to the enthusiastic students and parents who had waited outside the school gate upon hearing I was around.
