Just In:Sowore Meets Bail Conditions

The convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Omoyele Sowore has met the bail conditions imposed on him by the court.

Recall Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu had, on Oct. 21, varied the bail conditions granted Sowore, and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare.

Justice Ojukwu in her ruling ordered on the application for bail variation by the duo charged with treasonable felony among others.

She waived the earlier requirement, stating that Sowore should deposit N50m as security and also reduced the amount attached to Bakare’s bail.

Ojukwu added that the defendants be remanded in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS) pending when they are able to meet the bail conditions.

The judge, thereafter, adjourned till Nov. 6 and 7 for the commencement of trial.

Upon commencement of trial on Wednesday, Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), told the Federal High Court in Abuja that the defendants would be freed later on Wednesday.

He said, “I have already explained to the learned prosecuting counsel that we are encumbered by the refusal of the State Security Service to allow us to prepare for the defence of the defendants.

“I had already asked my learned counsel for the prosecution, that we are confident that the defendants will be freed today (Wednesday) from the custody of the SSS having met the bail conditions imposed on them by this honourable court.

“Once they are liberated from the custody of the SSS, we will be in a position to take full instruction from them.”

According to the local reports on Friday, former Süper Lig player Cevher Toktaş admitted his son to a local hospital on April 23 after he had a cough and a high fever.

The doctors at the hospital promptly quarantined the boy and the father, as the 5-year-old showed hallmark symptoms of COVID-19.

Sometime later in the same day, Toktaş summoned the doctors to the room and said the boy was having difficulty breathing.

The doctors rushed the boy to the intensive care unit, but he passed away less than two hours later.

In his statement to the police, Toktaş said he smothered his son with a pillow when they were alone in the room.

“I pressed a pillow on my son who was lying on his back. For 15 minutes, I pressed down on the pillow without lifting it up. My son was struggling during that time. After he stopped moving, I lifted the pillow. Then I yelled for doctors to help to draw any suspicions away from me,” his statement read.

When asked reason why he murdered his son, Toktaş said he killed his son because he simply “didn’t love him.”

Vehicle Tracker Aids Arrest Of Man Declared Wanted For Murder, Three Others

A man on police wanted list was on Thursday arrested after a vehicle he allegedly stole from a woman in Kumasi, was tracked and intercepted at Offinso in the Ashanti Region.

Nana Kofi Owusu, 29, was arrested after a woman (name withheld), who works at the Center for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) at Fumesua in Kumasi reported to the police on Wednesday, May 5 that the suspect had bolted with her Toyota Corolla vehicle with registration number GE 1210-16.

The victim had told the police that she became helpless after the vehicle developed a mechanical fault on the Adum-Kwanwoma stretch, while driving to work.

Luck, however, eluded Kofi Owusu, when he was arrested by the police at Offinso on Thursday, at about 6:00am following a dispatch message and information provided by telecom giant, MTN Ghana, which has a car tracking service team in Accra.

The suspect who was later handed over to the Asokwa Divisional Police Command for interrogation where investigations revealed that he had been declared wanted by the Cyber Crime Unit of the Ghana Police Service.

“Picture of the suspect was sent to the Unit Commander who confirmed that he is wanted by the Unit in a case of murder,” investigators say.

Other accomplices

The suspect also named Collins Ankomah, aged 27; Kwadwo Samuel Gyamfi, 32 and one Daniel Owusu Aboagye, as accomplices.

The three who have since been arrested confessed to the police during interrogation that they had committed several crimes including a recent robbery at Offinso in April this year.

Items stolen during the operation from a victim known only as Gyamera included; a black Nissan X-Trail 4×4 vehicle with registration number AS 8150-10, a fridge, four foam mattresses, an air-conditioner and other domestic appliances.

The items have been retrieved and impounded at Asokwa Divisional Police Headquarters.

The suspects have been detained as the Ashanti Regional Police Command launches an identification parade and brief the media over the development.
